Jesus Is Angry Again

There are more than a few times in the Gospels where Jesus expresses anger and frustration.  One of those is in the Gospel of Luke (10:13-16): "Woe to you Chorazin, woe to you Bethsaida!"  He's angry because, quite frankly, these people are dull.  They fail to recognize the wonders performed in their midst... they have become deadened, dulled, numbed to the incredible things happening in their midst.

The Lord answering Job out of the whirlwind (William Blake)
Many of us, despite (or perhaps because of) the preponderance of tantalizing and "mind-blowing" media, much of "ordinary" life has become too banal for us.  We grow dull, uninterested, anesthetized to the wonders that surround us.

It's a powerful thought, really: when was the last time I expressed awe at anything that was real and not on Upworthy or my Facebook feed?  Nature is filled with beauty, but there's always something to complain about: the rain falls from the sky, we curse the weather; the sun shines brightly, we curse the heat.  That's only one example!

In the Book of Job, after God rebukes Job (even with some biting sarcasm!), Job's only response is: "I put my hand over my mouth."  It's maybe the only true response we can offer when God is revealed and our ignorance and insignificance is shown.  It's also our usual response to things that are awe-inspiring, shocking, and amazing.  We put our hands over our mouths.

Can you marvel at God's work in you today, in the world that surrounds you, in the person you pass by on the street?
